Data & Digitalization Committee (DDC)

Background and vision

Digital transformation in wind energy sector

The Data and Digitalization Committee of the European Academy of Wind Energy (EAWE) is dedicated to driving the wind energy sector’s digital transformation. Our mission is to tackle the barriers to digitalization, bridge gaps between academia and industry, and enhance the value of data science and digital technologies, such as digital twins, in renewable energy.

Motivation: Overcoming Barriers to Digitalization

The wind energy sector faces several challenges in the digitalization journey:
• Data Availability: Issues related to access, quality, and fragmentation of data.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Ensuring the right combination of skills, methods, and data across the sector.
• Role of Academia: While data and digitalization are core to business, the role of academia in shaping these advancements is often less clear compared to other sectors.
• Competence and Recruitment: A shortage of qualified professionals in data science and digital technologies, coupled with competition from other industries for talent.

The objectives of the committee:

The Data and Digitalization Committee has set the following key objectives to accelerate digitalization in the wind energy sector:

Foster Synergy Between Academia and Industry: We aim to engage stakeholders across sectors to build a common understanding of the needs, capabilities, and opportunities in the fields of data science and digitalization.
Promote Education and Talent Development: We are committed to guiding and inspiring educational activities to cultivate a European talent pool with advanced digital skills for the wind energy sector.
Advance Scientific Priorities: We focus on identifying scientific priorities that will enhance the value of data and digital twins in renewable energy, driving innovation and impact.

Current Activities

Discussion Forums for Data Challenges

We create spaces for dialogue between data owners and academic researchers, bridging the gap between data needs and the development of data-driven scientific methods.

Conference Sessions

We organize Data Science sessions at major events like the WESC and Torque conferences, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

Hackathons and Educational Activities

We host educational events such as hackathons to inspire and engage the next generation of data scientists within the wind energy sector.

To achieve these objectives, the committee focuses on the initiatives above.
